Ricinus communis, the castor bean or castor-oil-plant, is a species of flowering plant in the spurge family, euphorbiaceae. It is the sole species in the monotypic genus, ricinus, and subtribe, ricininae. The evolution of castor and its relation to other species are currently being studied using modern genetic tools.  it reproduces with a mixed pollination system which favor selfing by geitonogamy but at the same time can be an out-crosser by anemophily or entomophily.  The castor bean plant is a natural mole repellant. The seeds are huge and have a lovely marbled pattern and come in various shades of red and black. They are poisonous especially to small children and pets, so should not be eaten and should be stored and handled with care. This plant grows very quickly, and can even grow as much as 15 feet in 1 year! It has a wonderful tropical look with its huge dramatic leaves. Bloom time: mid summer - early fall.
